Moving Forward

So, we sent DS off to high school this week. Those of you who know our story know that this is a big deal.

I didn't cry when he got on the bus to go to kindergarten 9 years ago, but when he walked out the front door on Wednesday and headed down the street to the bus stop by himself -- moving a little more slowly than he did the last time -- the tears caught me by surprise.

But it feels right. I feel like he's where he needs to be, and all of the people who have helped us get him there are my heroes. He is confident; he is happy. So, these weren't tears of sadness as I watch him leave us behind; these are tears of triumph as I watch him take on yet another challenge with enthusiasm and determination.

This evening I was catching up on my email, and my sister sent me a link to a video that, coupled with the events of the week, pretty much did me in. It just proves the point that no matter how much you might struggle, there is always someone else who struggles more mightily.

Book Review: In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
I. Love. This. Book.

Michael Pollan has certainly provided lots of food for thought. This isn't the last book you should read on this subject.

Read it. Digest it. And go look for more.

You will be reminded of things you already know and forgot, and you will learn something new as well. A lot of what Pollan has to say is common sense, but we are so bombarded by marketing hype in our society that we tend to forget that a lot of the stuff we put in our bodies is loaded with stuff that doesn't belong in our bodies.

The biggest revelation that I had while reading this book was how arrogant it is of us humans to think that we can improve upon foods in their natural state. God's green earth provides for us the necessary nutrients. There's nothing wrong with finding out how they work, but there's everything wrong with dissecting them and putting them back together in unexpected combinations.

Read. The. Book. And then go plant a garden.
